Dam sites

There are four dams on the Kennebec River targeted for purchase and eventual removal by The Nature Conservancy. The Shawmut Dam is critical in creating the river impoundment which backs upriver to SAPPI’s water intake. At 30M gallons per day, the mill requires significant and consistent water supply. If the Shawmut Dam is removed, the reduction in river water flow and depth will result in SAPPI’s closure.

SAPPI has invested $1B this decade in the mill, employs over 800 locals, and provides the bulk of wood harvesting contracts in rural Maine. We’re trying to get creative on how to keep the Shawmut Dam in place and keep SAPPI operational.
